A paraneoplastic syndrome(PNS) is medical problems that can occur in one part of the body due to cancer in another part of the body. A research of previous patients treated by them were presented by Dr Yogesh and Dr Vaibhavi in the Indian rheumatology conference in Guwahati. Both doctors are from Bengaluru,Karnataka. They described 14 patients who came to them between 2014-2018 with joint pain or other rheumatological symptoms but ended up having paraneoplastic syndromes (i.e. cancer related problem) . To differentiate the patients with normal rheumatologic disease and those with underlying cancer, they highlighted certain red flag symptoms(warning symptoms). The red flags were – lack of response to standard treatment, bone pain, night time sleep disturbing back pain, unintended significant weight loss , history of cancer. They concluded saying that cancer can cause certain rheumatological symptoms but it is important for doctors to look for these tell tale red flag signs to enable early diagnosis and treatment of possible underlying cancer.
