Vasculitis means inflammation of the blood vessels that causes changes in the blood vessel walls. Takayasu ‘s arteritis(TA) is a type of vasculitis that affects large arteries that can lead to blockages or narrowed arteries( stenosis) or abnormally dilated arteries( aneurysms). It is most commonly seen in young women. Glucocorticoids(steroids) is the standard treatment. A research of previous patients treated by them were presented by Dr Yogesh and Dr Vaibhavi in the Indian rheumatology conference in Guwahati. Both doctors are from Bengaluru,Karnataka. They had treated 2 patient with this disease with a common and easily available arthritis medication – Leflunomide. They used it in two patients with TA. They found that both patients could be continued on leflunomide for more than two years and the disease activity was well controlled and with no side effects. They concluded that leflunomide can be considered in the treatment of takayasu arteritis
